The new Mercedes-AMG ONE takes sports cars above, bringing Formula 1 technology to the streets. This long-awaited vehicle was unveiled on June 1, 2022, featuring a hybrid engine inspired by Formula 1 E Performance, futuristic controls and a unique set of design features inside and out.
The body of the Mercedes-AMG ONE is low and wide, with an aggressive front end and accentuated wheel arches. The model has fixed and active aerodynamic characteristics that can be changed by pressing a button. Air intakes, ailerons, a peaked spoiler and a two-piece retractable blade rear wing with an adjustable flap unfold in three different aerodynamic configurations, “Highway”, “Track” or “Race DRS” (Drag Reduction System ). Butterfly-style doors open diagonally forward and upward.
The Mercedes-AMG ONE runs on a high-performance hybrid drive that combines a 1.6-liter V6 hybrid petrol engine with single turbocharger assist with a total of four electric motors. “One was integrated into the turbocharger, another was installed directly on the combustion engine with a link to the crankcase, and the remaining two motors drive the front wheels,” Mercedez-Benz explains.
With this unique set of hardware in play, the Mercedes-AMD ONE is capable of producing a total power output of 1063 hp (782 kW). However, while the maximum system output is 1063 hp (782 kW), the maximum output of the combustion engine is 574 hp for the vehicle to be road legal. The Mercedes-AMG ONE has a top speed of around 219 mph (352 km/h) and can sprint from zero to 124.7 mph (200 km/h) in seven seconds.
The soul of Formula 1 inside
The company suggests that the Mercedes-AMG ONE offers a historic first with the only Formula 1 engine that has ever been approved for normal roads. The Mercedes-AMG ONE battery cell packs feature 768 cells that deliver a combined voltage of 800 V with a peak output of 400 kW. This is the same as four F1 batteries combined. At the front, each wheel has its own motor-generator unit delivering speeds of nearly 50,000 rpm.
The Mercedes-AMG ONE is equipped with 4MATIC+, a variable all-wheel-drive system. The rear axle is driven by the hybrid gasoline engine, while the front is exclusively electric. The sports car can also switch to fully electric driving mode. Key to its high performance, according to Mercedes, is battery cooling, which sees coolant circulating around all of the battery cells so that it can cool each cell individually. Active and fixed aerodynamic features also increase air intake, helping to keep system temperatures low.
A true Formula 1 interior
The interior of the Mercedes-AMG ONE is also inspired by F1, with additional features that make this vehicle legal on the road. There’s a real F1 steering wheel with a flat top and bottom and an array of controls and readouts available to the driver, much like a track-ready F1 steering wheel would, and a pair of high-resolution 10-inch displays. thumbs integrated into the dashboard. There is a multimedia screen mounted on the center console facing the driver, and the driver can switch between six driving programs: “Race Safe”, “Race”, “EV”, “Race Plus”, “Start 2″ or ” Individual” mode, complete with user-customized preferences.
Like many other race-inspired supercars, the company suggests the Mercedes-AMG ONE has a minimalist, “no style” design approach. Each component of the passenger compartment of this vehicle has a vital function. This is not to say that the vehicle is as uncompromising as a track-ready racer, because this vehicle is – again – designed for street driving. Unlike your average Formula 1 race car, the Mercedes-AMG ONE comes with air conditioning, power windows and airbag support.
The aforementioned screens give the driver access to a full infotainment system, and the spot that would normally house a rear-view mirror is taken up by a display link to a rear-facing MirrorCam.
The public will get their first view of this vehicle in action in the UK at the Festival of Speed at Goodwood in late June 2022.
