Central Rivers AEA Board of Directors Approves Sale of Former Special Education Building | Education News

CEDAR FALLS – The board of directors of the Central Rivers Area Education Agency on Tuesday approved the sale of a building that was part of its former offices.

What was known as the Special Education Services building, at 3706 Cedar Heights Drive, is being sold to J&S Ventures LLC for $ 460,000. According to the purchase contract, the closing date for the sale will be January 7.

In a brief online meeting, the council held a public hearing on the sale of the property and approved the deal. No one spoke at the hearing.

Until next month, the building and adjacent property at 3712 Cedar Heights Drive – also owned by Central Rivers – are leased to Waterloo Community Schools. Lowell Elementary School was moved there almost three years ago after the roof of its old Waterloo building collapsed. A new school will open in January.

J&S Ventures, according to the Iowa Secretary of State’s online records, is owned by James and Sandra Skarlis. They operate Community Motor Co. and Community Honda just northwest of the property at 4521 and 4617 University Ave.

Central Rivers AEA moved three buildings from Cedar Heights Drive in 2017 after purchasing another facility at 1521 Technology Parkway. The agency sold its old administrative center at 3722 Cedar Heights Drive just before the move for $ 707,000. She started renting the other two buildings to Waterloo schools in early 2019.

The AEA was actively trying to sell the buildings when the lease was signed. In October, the board of directors again approved the listing of the buildings for six months with Fischels Commercial Group.
